Quantizing Constrained Systems: New Perspectives
نویسندگان
چکیده
We consider quantum mechanics on constrained surfaces which have nonEuclidean metrics and variable Gaussian curvature. The old controversy about the ambiguities involving terms in the Hamiltonian of order h̄ multiplying the Gaussian curvature is addressed. We set out to clarify the matter by considering constraints to be the limits of large restoring forces as the constraint coordinates deviate from their constrained values. We find additional ambiguous terms of order h̄ involving freedom in the constraining potentials, demonstrating that the classical constrained Hamiltonian or Lagrangian cannot uniquely specify the quantization: the ambiguity of directly quantizing a constrained system is inherently unresolvable. However, there is never any problem with a physical quantum system, which cannot have infinite constraint forces and always fluctuates around the mean constraint values. The issue is addressed from the perspectives of adiabatic approximations in quantum mechanics, Feynman path integrals, and semiclassically in

متن کاملA New Reporter Gene Technology: Opportunities and Perspectives
The paper summarizes the current status of the reporter gene technology and their basics. Reporter gene technology is widely used to monitor cellular events associated with gene expression and signal transduction. Based upon the splicing of transcriptional control elements to a variety of reporter genes, it “reports” the effects of a cascade of signaling events on gene expression inside cells. ...
متن کاملSingular constrained linear systems
In the linear system Ax = b the points x are sometimes constrained to lie in a given subspace S of column space of A. Drazin inverse for any singular or nonsingular matrix, exist and is unique. In this paper, the singular consistent or inconsistent constrained linear systems are introduced and the effect of Drazin inverse in solving such systems is investigated. Constrained linear system arise ...
متن کاملAgainst the Wheeler-DeWitt equation
The ADM approach to canonical general relativity combined with Dirac’s method of quantizing constrained systems leads to the Wheeler-DeWitt equation. A number of mathematical as well as physical difficulties that arise in connection with this equation may be circumvented if one employs a covariant Hamiltonian method in conjunction with a recently developed, mathematically rigorous technique to ...
متن کاملOn the Emergence of Gauge Structures and Generalized Spin when Quantizing on a Coset Space
It has been known for some time that there are many inequivalent quantizations possible when the configuration space of a system is a coset space G/H. Viewing this classical system as a constrained system on the group G, we show that these inequivalent quantizations can be recovered from a generalization of Dirac’s approach to the quantization of such a constrained system within which the class...
